Chess Classic Mainz 2008 starts next week
23.07.2008 – The annual Chess Classic in Mainz, Germany, will be held from July 28th to August 3rd, 2008. The big event is the Grenke-Leasing Rapid Chess World Championship with Anand, Morozevich, Carlsen and Judit Polgar. Mainz 2008: Anand breaks Mainz simultaneous record
29.07.2008 Simultaneous events are chess spectacles. Only a few games make it to the textbooks, and the atmosphere is informal and noisy. But Vishy Anand seems undisturbed, concentrating only on breaking a record. He does, finishing with a single draw conceded. Mainz 2008: Kosteniuk wins Chess960, Rybka and Shredder qualify
01.08.2008 – Alexandra Kosteniuk won the 2nd FiNet Chess960 Women's Rapid World Championship, beating Ukrainian GM Kateryna Lahno in the final of this shuffle chess variant. On the second day of the computer Chess960 world championship Rybka scored nine points out of twelve games, easily qualifying for the final against Shredder (6.5/12). Reports and games.

03.08.2008 – The qualifier stage of the 13th Grenkeleasing Rapid Chess World Championship in Mainz ended with a victory by World Champion Vishy Anand, who beat Alexander Morozevich twice. Magnus Carlsen beat Judit Polgar to qualify for the final on Sunday against Anand. In the Livingston Chess960 Computer World Championship Rybka beat Shredder to take the title. 04.08.2008 – The final of the 13th Grenkeleasing Rapid Chess World Championship in Mainz – four 20'+2" rapid chess games – was a one-sided affair. World Champion Vishy Anand took the first two games fairly effortlessly, after which the young challenger Magnus Carlsen got two draws. In the match for third place Alexander Morozevich struggled to beat Judit Polgar in the final game. Big illustrated report.

Mainz 2008: Ian Nepomniachtchi wins Ordix Open
05.08.2008 – It was a dramatic last round: when other title contenders were playing short draws Ian Nepomniachtchi showed his fighting spirit and beat world-class GM Evgeny Bareev. "Nepo" shared the top place with Pavel Eljanov (but beat him on tiebreak points). A splendid performance was given by Kateryna Lahno, 18, who scored half a point less and ended up in fifth place.
