Super-GM Morelia-Linares begins today

Morelia R1: Carlsen beats Morozevich
18.02.2007 – Magnus Carlsen beat Alexander Morozevich in a game lasting five and a quarter hours. Anand held Topalov to an effortless draw with the black pieces. Svidler and Aronian drew in 39 moves. Morelia R2: Ivanchuk beats Topalov
19.02.2007 – The shock of the day came at the end of the first time control. Veselin Topalov, a pawn down against Ivanchuk, played a colossal blunder that lost instantaneously. 20.02.2007 – Another exciting round, with Anand outplaying Carlsen with black and joining Ivanchuk in the lead. Alexander Morozevich turned a dangerous position into a clear win against Aronian, but missed a key line that would have got him the full point. 22.02.2007 – Alexander Morozevich played an excellent game, holding out against Vishy Anand's aggressive intentions until just before the first time control. 23.02.2007 – A day of shocks. Both the top seeds lost, Anand in a tense struggle against Aronian, and Topalov with a sensational resignation in a position that must be a draw. Morelia R7: Anand, Topalov, Ivanchuk win
26.02.2007 – Halftime at the Morelia-Linares Super-GM tournament. Anand scored a fine black-piece victory over Leko to join Magnus Carlsen in the lead. Ivanchuk put a damper on Aronian's aspiration with a white-piece win, and Topalov defeated Morozevich to improve his position at the end of the table.

Morelia: the Great Mexican Chili Challenge
01.03.2007 – The first half of the Morelia-Linares Super-GM tournament ended with Anand and Carlsen in the joint lead. After the closing ceremony and some last-minute shopping, the participants all embarked on the trip back to Europe. Linares R8: all games drawn
02.03.2007 – The Super-GM Morelia/Linares has entered its second half with the first round completed in the Andalusian town of Linares. All games were drawn: Aronian-Svidler was an unfought 16-mover, Anand-Topalov a light 25-move tussle, Leko-Ivanchuk a 38-move struggle, and Morozevich vs Carlsen a 42-move battle with black pressing. 03.03.2007 – Topalov managed to save a white game against the clearly superior Ivanchuk, who got into time trouble and had to concede a draw. 05.03.2007 – India's superstar Vishy Anand scored a fine victory over young Norwegian Magnus Carlsen, who was relegated to equal second with Vassily Ivanchuk, a point behind the leader. 06.03.2007 – Magnus Carlsen continues his extraordinary performance with a further victory in Linares, taking veteran Vassily Ivanchuk to the cleaners on the white side of an Exchange Grunfeld. Anand drew Morozevich with black and leads by half a point ahead of Carlsen. Svidler, Aronian and Ivanchuk follow.

08.03.2007 – Peter Svidler defeated the luckless Peter Leko for his first win in this tournament. Since he hadn't lost any games either it moved him to third place. Alexander Morozevich beat Vassily Ivanchuk to join him at places 6-7. Magnus Carlsen held Veselin Topalov and his second place. Anand still leads with half a point. 09.03.2007 – Another unpleasant surprise for the former FIDE world champion: Veselin Topalov suffered his third defeat in this event, while Alexander Morozevich, who started very badly, has now caught Aronian at 50%. 10.03.2007 – With a final-round draw over Vassily Ivanchuk Indian superstar Vishy Anand clinched victory in the Morelia/Linares Super-GM tournament. Carlsen lost to Leko and Morozevich beat Svidler, so that in the end (would anyone have expected this after his disastrous start?) Alexander Morozevich shared second with Magnus Carlsen.
