World Ladies Tournament in Jinan

Report by Ali Nihat Yazici

The Chinese Chess Association (CCA) has invited twelve beautiful ladies from different parts of the world to play in the tournament: China, USA, France, Russia, Hungary, Armenia, Slovakia, Turkey, Iran and Malaysia. The event started today and ends on Tuesday, April 19.

The host city of Jinan (also Jì'nán or Chi-nan) is the capital and center for economy, culture and commerce of Shandong province in eastern China. The population is about five and a half million. There is spring in the air and a special warmth coming from the townsfolk. It is the traditional Chinese hospitality which we enjoy very much.

The tournament itself is being staged in the Yizheng Hotel. The Chinese name translates to "comfortable", and that is exactly what the hotel is. The twelve ladies are playing a round robin rapid chess tournament, at the rate of 30 minutes for all the moves plus a ten second increment for each move.

The tournament has been organised to celebrate and promote Chinese Chess League. There are 19 clubs in the league, which starts on April 20 (the day after the Ladies' tournament ends). Each team consists of five boards, three men and two women.
