FIDE October 2005 rating lists

In spite of retiring from competitive chess Garry Kasparov still tops the FIDE ratings list. He has done this countless times so far, with a highest-ever ranking of 2851 (in 7/1999). Kasparov is followed by Vishy Anand, who is six points ahead of Veselin Topalov. Peter Leko has retained his fourth place, Vassily Ivanchuk remains at fifth. Peter Svidler has gained two points and climbed from seven to six, while Vladimir Kramnik lost five points to slip from six to seven. Judit Polgar remains in the top ten at place eight.

The biggest winners we could spot in the October list were Liviu-Dieter Nisipeanu of Romania, who gained 28 points and jumped from 25 to 15; Shakhriyar Mamedyarov of Azerbaijan, who jumped from 54 to 28, also with a gain of 28; Pentala Harikrishna, who climbed from 59 to 31, Alexander Areshchenko, who jumped from 79 to 49, both again with 28-point gains. Pavel Eljanov of Ukraine gained 24 points to climb from 63 to 41, and Teimour Radjabov of Azerbaijan gained 22 to go from 23 to 18.

The biggest drops were by Alexander Motylev, who shed 43 points (in 44 games) to drop from 27 to 79; and Emil Sutovsky of Israel, who lost 20 to drop from 28 to 48 in the list.

Addendum: IM George Mastrokoukos and Ioannis Kerkines, both of Athens, Greece, drew our attention to the fact that Vasilios Kotronias of Greece has gained 39 points and moved up to place 84 on the list. An anonymous visitor from California noted that Julio Granda Zuniga of Peru has gained 30 points to move to place 67. Flóvin of Copenhagen mentions that the winner of Dortmund, Arkadij Naiditsch, gained 29 points and climbed to 64 on the world rankings.
