The match-up of the day was Russia vs Armenia. Classical chess world champion Vladimir Kramnik faced the winner of the FIDE world cup in Khanty-Mansiysk and the Super-GM in Linares, Levon Aronian. This Alien-vs-Predator like encounter was very exciting to watch and saw Kramnik, who recently recovered from a long illness, grittily determined to get another full point.

Russia suffered an upset 1:2 defeat by Ukraine, when Natalia Zhukova capitalised on a blunder by her opponent, the aggressively enterprising Alexandra Kosteniuk. The other two games were drawn, but in spite of the 1:2 defeat Russia kept its lead with 4:1 match victories and 12.5/15 board points. Ukraine has won all its matches so far, but has scored half a board point less.

It is perhaps a bit early in the tournament to start measuring overall performances, but then again, what else are computers good for if not to generate statistics? Note that in the following tables the number of games by the individual players is fairly important, while the board really isn't, since the performance is calculated on the basis of the strength of the opposition. For instance Kateryna Lahno has 4/4 points on board two for Ukraine, but her performance, due to the opposition, is 2465, which puts her on place 24.
