The 4th Calvia Chess Festival is took place in Polideportivo Municipal de Magaluf (Calvia, Mallorca, Spain) from October 6 till 24 – the International Open was held from October 15th-23th, 2007. Format: nine round Swiss; time control: 90 minutes for the game plus 30 seconds increment from move one. Prize fund: 17.000 €: first 4.000 €; second 2.000 €, third 1.500 €, fourth 1.200 €, etc. up to 20th 200 €.
The International Tournament was won by Israeli GM Viktor Mikhalevski of Israel, who staked his claim right from the start by winning is first seven games. His final score of 8.0/9 translates to an Elo performance, by our reckoning, of 2876. After seven rounds, with 7.0/7 points, it was theoretically 3289, and after eight rounds, with 7.5 points, it was 2977. Amazing, amazing.
The winner with a 8/9 score: GM Victor Mikhalevski of Israel
A full point behind Mikhalevski we find Canadian GM Kevin Spaggett, plus a usual bevy of Eastern European grandmasters, with a Swede, an Italian and a Cuban sprinkled in.
Second: GM Kevin Spraggett of Canada, with seven points
Third: GM Mikheil Mchedlishvili (try to pronounce that!) of Georgia
Fourth: long-haired GM Yuriy Kuzubov, 2582, Ukraine
Swedish GM Emanuel Berg, 2593, scored 6½ points
Italian Champion 2007 Michele Godena, 2535, 6½ points
We are especially pleased to see Ketevan Arakhamia-Grant in the top group, with a performance 133 points better than her nominal 2432 rating. This Georgian lady, who now lives in Scotland and has played for the UK, is well on her way to a full GM title.
Top female player in Magaluf: Ketevan Arakhamia-Grant
