Corsican Circuit 2007: Nakamura’s triumph

The XI Corsica Masters took place from October 28th to 30th. After Aiacciu, where Vladislav Tkachiev was crowned European and French Blitz Champion, in the second part of the Corsican Circuit 2007 in Bastia, Corsica, the 19-year-old, Hikaru Nakamura won the knockout event, beating Mikhalevski, van Wely, Bareev and Rustam Kasimdzhanov in the process. With this victory Nakamura proves that he is one of the best players in rapid chess. The rate of play was 10 min for the entire game + 3 seconds per move increment.

The winner of the Corsican Circuit 2007: Hikaru Nakamura

The American largely dominated the debates during this Corsica Masters, meeting faint resistance in his final match against Kasimdzhanov, whom he defeated 2-0. Kasim did not have the same inspiration as in his
beautiful semi-final against Anatoly Karpov. But the general opinion was that Nakamura was just too strong for the Uzbek former FIDE world champion. From now on, in Corsica, all chess fans await the result of his confrontation against Vishy Anand in the 2008 edition!

All players in the final (except Karpov and Kasimdzhanov, the latter being seeded as last year's winner) qualified in a ten-round Preliminary Swiss with 95 participants, also played at the rate of 10 min/game + 3sec increment. Nakamura came clear first with 8/10 and a 2800+ performance. Here were the final top 14 standings:
