ETCC: Russia leads in both men's and women's section

by ChessBase
11/6/2007 – Actually the men are through, with a three-point lead before the final round they cannot be caught. But at least they were forced to concede their first draw, against Spain, led by the volatile Alexei Shirov, who defeated Alexander Morozevich. In the women's section Poland suffered a first defeat, while Russia won their match to take a two-point lead. Pictures, results and games.

Crete, Greece / 27 October – 7 November

The European Team Championship is taking place in Crete, Greece. It is a nine round Swiss team tournament, with one general section and one section for the women's teams, considered as separate competitions. According to FIDE rules, the time controls are 90 min for 40 moves + 30 min for the rest of the game + 30 sec increment for every move played starting from the first move.

Round eight report

Russia at last met its match. The Spanish team held the dominating Russians to a 2:2 draw when Alexei Shirov defeated Alexander Morozevich to compensate for a board four defeat of Khamrakulov at the hands of Jakovenko. The match Azerbaijan-Armenia ended with the same score with the trade of wins occurring on boards two and three. Ukraine too were held by Poland 2:2 when Ivanchuk won and Volokitin lost. Slovenia lost a key match to Israel, which may cost them their place at the top of the final table.

The Spanish team, with Shirov, Vallejo, Illescas and Khamrakulov

Stopped the Russians' perfect match score: Alexei Shirov of Spain

Norway vs Montenegro, Carlsen vs Djukic (Carlsen won, Norway drew)

Standings

In the men's section Russia is already through and, with their three match points lead, cannot be caught by any other team. Israel and Armenia are in joint 2-3 with equal match and board points. Slovenia's loss against Israel put them into 7th place with slim chances of taking Silver or Bronze.

In the women's section Poland's loss to Armenia put them a solid two points behind the Russian team, which only needs to draw in the final round to clinch the title. The Netherlands is out of contention, while the German team has advanced from place 12 to place eight.
