Olympiad R1: Azerbaijan and Armenia score 4-0

11/14/2008 – The first round of the Chess Olympiad in Dresden, Germany, began with white-wash victories by Azerbaijan and Armenia. Host Germany defeated Scotland 3.5:0.5, and the second team actually beat Bulgaria 2.5:1.5. In the women's section Russia crushed Azerbaijan 4-0, while Germany was held by Iran. 38th Chess Olympiad Dresden 2008

The Olympiad is taking place from November 12th to 25th, 2008, in the Congress Hall in Dresden, Saxony, Germany. 156 teams from 152 nations are participating, with most of the top players present.

Round one men's section

Russia (without Kramnik) struggled against Switzerland; Germany one beat Scotland convincingly, as did Germany 2 against Bulgaria (without Topalov). Azerbaijan defeated the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia 4-0, and Armenia did the same to Italy. India (without Anand) defeated Canada 2½:1½, Norway beat Austria 3:1. Here are the top results.
