MITROPACUP
2009The Chess Federation of Slovenia was the organiser of the MITROPACUP 2009, a team tournament which was held from 9 May 2009 (arrival) until 17 May (last round, closing ceremony) in Hotel Sava, Rogaska Slatina, Slovenia. Each team was composed of four players plus one reserve (in the men's section) and two players plus one reserve (in the women's section). Time controls were 90 minutes for 40 moves, followed by 30 minutes to finish the game, with 30 seconds increment after each move starting from move one.
When we last visited this tournament Hungary was in the lead, with Italy second an Croatia third. In the end Hungary and Croatia switched places: the Croatian men's team had the best match and board points. Italy came second with the same number of board points (22.5) but with two less match points. The two teams are followed by Hungary, and behind them we find the Slovenians and Germans with equal match and board points (11 and 20.5)

The best player on board one was Italy's Fabiano Caruana, with 6.0/8 points = 75%. This is the best result of the entire tournament, certainly from the performance. Amongst the reserve ("board 5") players Sasa Martinovic of Croatia scored 5.0/6, which comes to 83%.
In the women's section nothing much changed – the two Slovenian teams dominated from start to finish, and ended in first and second place. Behind Slovenia 2 there is a considerable gap, with Italy lagging by 1.5 board and 4 match points. Hungary has the same number of board points but one match point less than Italy.
