5/31/2009 – He had at least joint victory after the third day. Ukraine's top GM Vassily Ivanchuk won the first game on day four, with the black pieces in just 28 moves. The second game lasted 56 moves and ended in a draw for the final 5.5-2.5 victory. Ivanchuk's performance was close to 2800, Navara played about 50 points below his nominal rating (for tournament chess). Illustrated report.

Navara vs Ivanchuk

The eight-game match in rapid chess, with the best Czech player David Navara playing against grandmaster Vassily Ivanchuk, who belongs to the absolute world chess top, took place between 27th to 31st May 2009 at the Best Western Kampa hotel in Prague.

Forty-year-old Vassily Ivanchuk has been among the world's top players for the last twenty years. In the January 1st 2009 ratings he was third in the world.

The match of grandmasters Navara vs Ivanchuk was the main attraction of the chess festival ČEZ CHESS TROPHY 2009, which was held by a civic association Prague Chess Society. All games were commented for the audience by the Czech-American grandmaster Lubomír Kaválek, and were shown on-line. The match was complemented by a chess simul and by lectures by grandmasters Lubomír Kaválek, Vlastimil Hort and Ján Plachetka.

The chess festival ČEZ CHESS TROPHY 2009 was held in partnership with the capital city Prague.
