2010 Chess Olympiad Khanty-Mansiysk: Round 1 report

by Albert Silver
9/22/2010 – After the expected hustle-bustle of the opening day, the first round went underway with the strong paired against the weak. What this usually means is crushing scores on the one hand, and shock surprises on the other, and we were not disappointed. However, some players were able to shine, leaving a mouthwatering tournament ahead. Here is the report with games, results, and videos.

2010 Chess Olympiad Khanty-Mansiysk

Round 1

The first round of the Olympiads paired the strong versus the weak in normal Swiss System style, leaving maximum room for the unexpected to happen. Overall, the favorites did what was expected, winning by crushing scores as they outrated their opponents by over 300 Elo on average at times. That said, a few unexpected results did occur such as Grischuk's draw on board one for Russia against Ireland's IM Sam Collins, or Hungary's Balogh (2608) who drew against Jordan's Samhouri (2269). However the biggest first-round upset was handed to reigning Dutch champion Jan Smeets (2669), who lost to IM Lisandro Munoz (2391), leading to only the narrowest of victories by the Netherlands, with a 2.5-1.5 win over the Dominican Republic, and what can certainly be considered a moral victory by their opponents.

Judit Polgar (2682) played board two in round one, seated between Zoltan Almasi (2707),
and 2010 Hungarian champion, Ferenc Berkes (2678) on the right.

That said, the significant disparity in ratings also lay the ground for the players to warm up and shine if they were so inclined. GM Judit Polgar, playing third board for Hungary, and quite inactive over the last year and a half in classical games, reminded us why she is the top female player in history when she produced the following little gem.
