The 16th Asian Games have started, and take place from November 12th to the 27th. It is a full Olympic calibre event, with every sport you would expect, from gymnastics to swimming to... chess. The chess is divided into two events, the individual rapids, which are nine rounds of action with the men's and women's sections, and starting today, the team events, with 25 men's teams, and 20 women's teams, played at the slower 90 minutes plus a 30 second increment per move.
The men's individual rapid event finished with a photo finish between the 2004 FIDE World Champion Rustam Kasimdhzanov and Vietnamese rising-star Liem Le Quang, both with 7.5/9. Rustam took the gold as the first tie-break was direct confrontation, and he had beaten Liem in the seventh round. Le Quang therefore took silver, and branze was Chinese GM Bu Xiangzhi with 6.5/9.

In the women's individual event, elo-favorite Chinese GM Hou Yifan crushed the field with a merciless 8.5/9 and a 2798 performance, followed by her compatriot, Zhao Xue, on 7.5/9 and silver medal. Bronze was taken by 18-year-old Indian talent, IM Harika Dronavalli, rated 2525, with 6.5/9.

The event will now enter the team event stage, with teams of four players, battling it out over nine rounds, in slow and serious competition.
