Factsheet – Chess in Sweden

The Swedish Chess Federation estimates that about 2.7 million Swedes can play chess. About 250,000 continuously monitor chess news on the Internet, and at least 50,000 play chess at some point each year. The Swedish Chess Federation has 20,600 registered members in 420 clubs. A majority are adolescents and or young adults, so that the SSF is regarded as a typical youth organisation.

  • The work of the SSF is divided into six different committees:

  • Allsvenskan, the Swedish league system, consists of the Elite League, Premier League, and the divisions I-III. A total of approximately 200 teams play in the premier league.

  • The SSF team captain and coach Anders Pettersson accompanies the Swedish team to all the major international team competitions, Olympiads and Team Championships.

  • The SSF arragnes domestic tournaments, the most important of which is the national championship which is played for two weeks each summer.

  • The youth committees arrange school competitons and coaching session with helpers throughout the country.

  • One of the most important projects of the SSF is Chess Four. Every year nearly 1000 school classes around the country learn to play chess, and 10,000 children start participating in one of the four qualifiers for the Chess Four competition.

  • The Swedish Chess Federation publishes a member magazine “Tidskrift för schack” and published daily news on its web site www.schack.se.
