FIDE July ratings – Carlsen at a record 2837

by ChessBase
7/1/2012 – "The gap is narrowing," we wrote in May, when Armenian GM Levon Aronian was just ten points behind the Norwegian prodigy Magnus Carlsen. The difference has now grown to a whopping 21 points, with Magnus setting his sights on the all-time 2851 record set by Garry Kasparov. FIDE has announced that it will in future publish its ratings on a monthly basis and include Rapid and Blitz.

Rapid and Blitz ratings

The big news is that FIDE has new ratings available for Rapid and Blitz; that from July 2012 FIDE will be publishing its rating lists on monthly basis; and that the rating floor for players to be included in all lists will be lowered to 1000. The rapid and blitz ratings have not yet been put into top-100 tables (the number of games by strong players is not yet high enough), but you can download the rapid and blitz ratings as text files and start exploring. You can also go to the general search list of FIDE and enter a player's name.

FIDE July 2012 – Top 100 Players

The amazing Magnus Carlsen has added two more points to his rating to reach a record of 2837, just 15 points below Garry Kasparov's all-time high of 2851. At the same time Levon Aronian lost nine points, so that the difference between the number one and two on the list is now a whopping 21 points. Vladimir Kramnik shed two rating points, painful since he dropped out of the 2800 club. But he remains in third place. Taimour Radjabov is in fourth, ahead of World Champion Vishy Anand. A bunch of young guns follow: Karjakin, Nakamura and Caruana, with the perennial roller coaster players Morozevich and Ivanchuk behind them.

Top climbers and descenders

In the previous list there were twenty top players who had gained ten or more points. This time it is just five, and nine who lost ten or more points. Boris Gelfand gained his points by drawing Vishy Anand in the World Championship in Moscow – and Anand logically lost these points, the Elo system being essentially a zero-sum game. Viktor Bologan continues his rise and is now in the top twenty. Good to know that the Moldavian GM is one of our star authors.

The biggest loss was suffered by top Czech GM David Navara, who has probably been playing too much in this year.

FIDE Top 100 Women July 2012

Judit Polgar is still on top of the list, in fact with an increased lead, since her nearest rival, Chinese women's world champion Hou Yifan lost six points in the two-month period. Slovenian GM Anna Muzychuk is now eight points ahead of India's Humpy Koneru, who was the challenger of Hou in the world championship match last year. Anna is the fourth female to break 2600.

FIDE Top 20 Girls July 2012

In the girl's list Hou Yifan naturally dominated. She is now 161 points ahead of her nearest rival, IM Mariya Muzychuk (sister of Anna), who in turn is 49 points ahead of the number three girl, IM Anastasia Bodnaruk. 12-year-old schoolgirl Zhansaya Abdumalik from Kazakhstan, who recently completed her WGM norm, is still rated just 2120 and so is not in the list.
