99th Championships of British Isles

The British Chess Championships is taking place in take place in North Shields,
the furthest north the Championships have ever been staged in England. [Addendum:
Ron Canter of March, Cambs., informs us that the most northern place in England
to hold the British Championship was Sunderland in 1966, where he was one of
the organisers. It was won by Jonathan Penrose.
North Shields (locally simply known as "Shields") is a town on the
north bank of the River Tyne. Its name derives from Middle English "schele"
meaning temporary sheds or huts (used by fishermen), and still today, the area
is synonymous with fishing and other trades associated with seafaring. Here
