ECCC Eilat: ...and then there were three

10/14/2012 – After three rounds of the European Club Cup 2012 there are three teams sharing the lead, with 6/6 match points: Saint-Petersburg, Economist Saratov and Tomsk-400. The top seed Socar Azerbaijan, which lost in round one, is staging a determined comeback with a 6-0 third-round win. In the women's section Monte-Carlo, led by Hou Yifan, won their third straight match and are in the sole lead.

The 28th European Club Cup 2012 is taking place in Eilat, Israel, as a seven-round Swiss from October 11 to 18 (no free day). The rounds starts at 15:00 local time. The time controls are 90 minutes for 40 moves plus 30 minutes for the rest of the game with an increment of 30 seconds per move, starting from move one. The zero tolerance rule (6.6a of the FIDE Laws of Chess) will be applied: any player who arrives at the chessboard after the start of the session loses the game.

Round three report

Saint-Petersburg Chess Federation, Tomsk-400 and Ashdod cemented their leads with wins, Saint-Petersburg doing so most convincingly with a 5.5-0.5 win that left it with the best tiebreak: 146.8 vs 112.0 and 102.3 for its rivals. Notable was the clean 6-0 victory of SOCAR Azerbaijan over Oslo Schakselskap.

Cercle d'Echecs de Monte-Carlo continued their winning ways with a third straight victory, built on fine win by Hou Yifan over GM Elina Danielian.Ugra and Ashdod both drew their matches, leaving Monte-Carlo alone on the top of the rankings.
