Robert Ris' Fast and Furious: An interesting idea in the Reti

by Robert Ris
4/25/2025 – In his new Fast & Furious show, Robert Ris looks at an interesting, surprisingly tricky line in the Reti. | Fast & Furious is available on-demand with a ChessBase Premium Account. You can register a Premium account here.

This video course offers you a complete, clear repertoire for Black against the moves 1.Nf3 and 1.c4. The recommended variations are easy to learn and not difficult to remember, but also pose White serious challenges.

The 17-year-old German talent Leonardo achieved a GM norm at the Grenke Chess Open, but struggled in two of his Black games against GMs Subelj and Saric, which featured the same opening variation.

This week I have a closer look at an interesting line from the Reti Opening (Catalan without d4). The position after 1.Nf3 d5 2.g3 Nf6 3.Bg2 e6 4.0-0 Be7 5.c4 0-0 6.b3 d4 7.d3!? is certainly much trickier than most people would expect!

Exercise: White has a very surprising idea here (difficult!). Both players missed it. Can you find it?

Feel free to move the pieces on the live diagram!
