Game of the Week #612

One week before the start of the Candidates, it is interesting to see how the top favourites are faring. Fabiano Caruana is the only player apart from Magnus Carlsen currently rated above 2800 and is third on the all-time ranking list.

This week in the American Cup he scored an instructive positional win against Grigoriy Oparin, which is our game of the week. A masterclass in dealing with the bishop pair.

Warm-up question: What would you play here with Black?

This week’s show

The flexible Open Spanish

In this opening Black opts for active piece play and is not afraid to fight for the initiative from an early stage. One of the many good features of this opening is that Black is often the side which controls the pace of the game.
