Game of the Week #615

The Candidates Tournament in Toronto is super exciting, with Nepomniachtchi and Gukesh currently sharing the lead with 6 out of 10, half a point ahead of Caruana, Nakamura and Praggnanandhaa.

Last week we studied a win by Nepo, so this week we have chosen a game by Gukesh. In round seven, Gukesh suffered a painful defeat to Firouzja, but in the very next round he bounced back to win an impressive game with Black against Vidit, which is our Game of the Week.

Warm-up question: What would you play here with Black?

This week’s show

The flexible Open Spanish

In this opening Black opts for active piece play and is not afraid to fight for the initiative from an early stage. One of the many good features of this opening is that Black is often the side which controls the pace of the game.
