A 10-year-old takes down Carlsen

Faustino Oro, Argentina’s ‘golden boy’, became the youngest player to ever get an IM norm in September 2023. Before that, he had also been the youngest-ever to surpass both the 2200 and the 2300-rating marks.

Now living in Spain, where his parents intend to create a better environment for his development, the youngster not only has a training schedule of 12 hours per week, but also plays plenty of online chess, as reported by Infobae.

In a recent edition of chess.com’s Bullet Brawl, Oro got to play his first-ever game against Magnus Carlsen. The 10-year-old came out of the opening unscathed and went on to gain a pawn before reaching the endgame. A grave mistake by Carlsen gave the youngster an extra piece, which he converted into a memorable — yet symbolic, since 1-minute games are extremely volatile — victory.

Oro was streaming the tournament on his YouTube channel, and clipped his game against Carlsen. We can hear him say, “If I lose this position, I should retire from chess”, while his little dance of celebration at the end is surely endearing.
