Sinquefield Cup: Five draws, Caruana remains sole leader

8/23/2025 – The fifth round of the Sinquefield Cup ended with all five games drawn, though several encounters carried plenty of tension. Fabiano Caruana maintained his lead after a balanced game with Wesley So, reaching the halfway point on 3½ points. Jan-Krzysztof Duda came closest to victory, missing a brilliant tactic that would have likely given him the win against world champion Gukesh Dommaraju. The players now get a rest day before the action continues with round six on Sunday. | Photo: Lennart Ootes

8/23/2025 – For a long time in the seventh round, Matthias Bluebaum had real chances of scoring a win and getting closer to leader Nodirbek Yakubboev in the standings – but in the end, the two-time European champion remains a full point behind the Uzbek grandmaster. On Saturday, the two will play each other, and Bluebaum must win with black to catch him in the lead. Radoslaw Wojtaszek and David Navara will be keeping their fingers crossed for him, as both are also one point behind the leader. | Photo: Lennart Ootes (Chess Olympiad 2022)

8/22/2025 – Fabiano Caruana took the sole lead at the Sinquefield Cup after defeating Nodirbek Abdusattorov in round four, his second straight win. Maxime Vachier-Lagrave again missed a clear winning chance, this time against world champion Gukesh Dommaraju, while Alireza Firouzja's sharp encounter with Wesley So also ended in a draw. | Photo: Lennart Ootes
