Game of the Week #613

The Candidates Tournament is about to start and will occupy our attention for the next few weeks, but for now our theme is the French Defence. In our game of the week, Ivic-Mishra, played in the seventh round of the Grenke Open, White came as close to refuting the French Defence as one can get. Of course, with accurate play Black can hold, as in any main opening, but White's remarkable concept has universal value and can certainly give Black players a headache for a while.

Warm-up question: What would you play here with White?

The flexible Open Spanish

In this opening Black opts for active piece play and is not afraid to fight for the initiative from an early stage. One of the many good features of this opening is that Black is often the side which controls the pace of the game.
